The lightning storm of June 20, 2008 ignited several wildfires in the Salmon River watershed. These fires are continuing to burn with diminishing intensity as of September 26, 2008. The fires are being managed for the benefit of natural resources and/or wildland fire use by the US Forest Service. Structure protection is in place in communities threatened by the fires.
The Ukonom Complex has extended through much of the north and western portions of the Salmon River watershed and has connected to the Panther Fire and Siskiyou Complex to the north.

Much of the Ukonom Complex is located within the Marble Mountain Wilderness Area and adjacent roadless areas. Initial ignition points were near Merrill Mountain, Black Mountain, Medicine Mountain, Black Mountain, Portuguese Creek, and Crapo Mountain.
These fires will burn into fall and will ultimately be extinguished by seasonal rains. Smoke and ash continue to diminish air quality in some areas.
As of September 26, the fire is being managed by local crews only.
The fire burning in the Caribou Lake area in the high country of the South Fork Salmon Trinity Alps) and the Anthony Milne Fire in the headwaters of Wooley Creek are now being managed as part of the Bear Wallow Complex.
The Inciweb site has detailed information on the Bear Wallow Complex.
The fires of the Gould Complex burned in Gould Gulch near Cecilville. These fires were contained on July 2 and all firefighters have been removed from the fire.
The SRRC is assisting the US Forest Service in assessing the fires, GIS mapping, supporting the Salmon River Fire Safe Council and by providing the fire management teams with valuable information and data about fire history in the area. The SRRC is working as a community liason to disseminate factual information about the fire to the local community.
Daily press releases about the fires are posted on the Klamath National Forest's online newsroom. The InciWeb fire information website includes the Ukonom Complex, Bear Wallow Complex and the nearby Siskiyou Fire Complex on the Klamath National Forest. A map of the Ukonom Complex is updated as frequently as possible on the SRRC website.
